In his past, Childes reluctantly helped the police on the mainland find a child murderer. Does that sound a bit harsh? Because honestly, I think it’s a generous assessment of his character. Moon tells the story of Johnathon Childes, an appropriately named man-child with psychic abilities who would rather abandon his family and run away to an island than deal with the reality of his talent. I have many thoughts on this loathsome book. If my uncle was alive today, I’m sure we would have had a lively debate about Moon over a glass of red. He loathed one of my favourite movies The Descent with a passion that was only matched by my loathing of his favourite movie, The Covenant. I should mention, despite sharing similar tastes, my uncle and I often disagreed on the quality of individual works of fiction. One of the titles I picked up through the fog of grief that day was Moon. My uncle and I have always shared a love of the macabre, so I was not surprised to find an impressive collection of horror novels on his jumbled shelves. In the days that followed his funeral, his friends and family were welcomed into his home and encouraged to seize a momento.

Entire villages and cities are in danger and the only chance left is to use the treated and immunized John Holman to take on the fog from the inside where who knows what awaits him. An insane Holman is pulled up from the crack, a product of the deadly fog. An unexpected earthquake swallows his car releasing a fog that had been trapped underground for many years.

John Holman is a worker for the Department of the Environment investigating a Ministry of Defence base in a small rural village.

Herbert's second book, it is completely unrelated to the film The Fog by John Carpenter. It is about a deadly fog that drives its victims insane when they come into contact with it. The Fog is a horror novel by English writer James Herbert, published in 1975.
